Proposal outcome

In September 2022, the Waitākere Ranges Local Board and Auckland Transport proposed to upgrade the existing pedestrian crossing facilities at the intersection of Titirangi Road and South Titirangi Road. These changes aim to improve accessibility and safety for pedestrians.

After reviewing all the feedback, we are proceeding with the work as proposed.

These works will help support our Vision Zero goal.

This proposal is funded and supported by the Waitākere Ranges Local Board Transport Capital Fund.

What happens next

We anticipate the changes will be constructed between July 2023 and June 2024. However, if there is any change to the programme, the webpage will be updated accordingly.

Community feedback

Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge. A summary of your feedback and our responses to community questions is below.

  • Suggestion to narrow South Titirangi Road so that drivers cannot turn right and shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians.

This project aims to provide a safer way for people to cross South Titirangi Road, while balancing the needs of other road users. The proposed changes will reduce the crossing distance as much as possible and keep the road wide enough for larger vehicles to navigate the tight corner at this intersection safely.

We're proposing improvements in your area

The Waitākere Ranges Local Board are proposing to upgrade the existing pedestrian crossing facilities at the intersection of Titirangi Road and South Titirangi Road. This proposal aims to improve accessibility and safety for pedestrians, especially for pram or wheelchair users and the visually impaired.

The project is supported by the Local Board Transport Capital Fund. We will deliver these improvements on behalf of your local board.

We are proposing to:

  • make the existing traffic island on South Titirangi Road wider and longer
  • adjust or re-align the existing pram crossing, so that it leads pedestrians exactly to the safer side of the road
  • Install tactile pavers at the existing pram crossing on the western side of the intersection. These are yellow guidance paving markers that help visually impaired people find their way to the crossing and safely cross the road.
  • widen the footpath on the western side of the intersection.

A wider traffic island shortens the crossing distance. This will make it safer for pedestrians to wait for a gap in traffic. A longer traffic island will discourage drivers from making U-turns.

The current design of the pram crossing leads pedestrians in the wrong direction. The changes we are proposing will ensure that pedestrians can travel in a consistent and safe line to the other side of the road.

What happens next

  • We’ll listen to all the feedback we receive, and then decide the best way to move forward.
  • We’ll post the outcome of this proposal and a summary of community feedback on this webpage.
  • We can email you the proposal outcome as soon as it’s ready – just select that option when you fill in the survey.
